Three unexpected things in the year since Dobbs

Three unexpected things in the year since Dobbs

The overturn of Roe v. Wade, as was accomplished with the 2022 Dobbs decision, was much sought after by a generation of pro-lifers. Some who had fought against the culture of abortion sweeping our nation in the late 60s, 70s and 80s did not live to see this momentous day last June. If they had witnessed the Dobbs ruling, they would likely be surprised by three aspects that have unfolded in its wake.

Suddenly the medical condition “ectopic pregnancy” — a term that most people, including women who have given birth, can’t even define — was seemingly everywhere even though the condition “affects 1-2% percent  of all pregnancies.”

Google Trends shows a 300x growth in searches for the term “ectopic pregnancy” in the days following the SCOTUS ruling. Headlines in many major news outlets swiftly spread concern for the impact of the Dobbs decision on care for women facing ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy outside of the uterus).

Somehow new abortion laws enacted in Life States were seen as directly threatening the medical care of women who might, possibly, face an ectopic pregnancy.

The shrillness of this new focus on ectopic pregnancy was conveniently set aside for the sake of greater distribution of the abortion pill, mifepristone.

The FDA, at the behest of the Biden administration, reduced rules designed to protect women from harm (known as REMS) such as required in-person doctor visits that had been in place for more than two decades despite knowing that ectopic pregnancy is “responsible for 9% of pregnancy-related deaths in the United States.” The FDA did this even while its own website notes women, “should not take mifepristone, in a regimen with misoprostol, for medical termination of pregnancy if they have an ectopic pregnancy.”

The public cry for women’s health concerns masked the private maneuvering that put more women at risk for the sake of abortion “access.”

Even more unexpected was the immediate physical attack on pregnancy help centers.

Such attacks began immediately with the unprecedented leak of the first draft of the decision in May.

Spontaneous pro-abortion protests at the Supreme Court steps were in line with attempts to dissuade the highest court in the land. Coordinated domestic terrorism by a group calling themselves “Jane’s Revenge” targeted grassroots ministries where women receive services, usually including ultrasound, for free.

This violence and vandalism was very much out of line

Flowing from growing negative campaigns, Big Tech censorship, and abortion activists decrying licensed pregnancy help organizations as “fake clinics” (only because they won’t provide abortions) came physical vandalism that included threats of violence against pregnancy help staff. A handful of these attacks went beyond spray paint and busted property to fire-bomb attacks.

Hurting those who are trying to help women only served to hurt the very women abortion proponents claim to serve.

This is akin to Big Tobacco trashing a smoking cessation center just because the potential for a law change was underway. Or maybe it’s more like slave patrols in the 1850s seeking to damage the Underground Railroad and derail its success liberating human beings from the sin of slavery.

Helping women access alternatives to abortion should never be a target for political activism, much less so domestic terrorism. Even administrations in Abortion States should seek to help, not hinder, local efforts to support women in their pregnancy. Unless…

It was never really about “choice.”

This may not be that unexpected, but the last vestiges of the veneer of abortion being a woman’s “reproductive choice” was rightly ripped away in the wake of the Dobbs decision.

Abortion States, like New York, had already been moving, more quickly than the FDA, to take away common sense protections for women found in pro-life laws. Post-Dobbs Life States have moved to protect women and babies from abortion while Abortion States have moved to protect abortion and abortionists.

There is no greater example of this than the Abortion State of Colorado, which just passed a law intending to ban “medication abortion reversal,” more commonly known as “abortion pill reversal.”

Despite the reversal just being a high dose of progesterone that is bio-identical to what the woman’s own body creates to sustain pregnancy, the Big Abortion politicians dominating Colorado’s political landscape moved quickly to punish any medical healthcare professional from helping a woman choose to counteract her abortion.

Through this effort they seek to deny a woman who had taken the first abortion pill, mifepristone, the right to withdraw her consent from an abortion she no longer wants.

Even now other abortion-beholden politicians in Abortion States are lining up to do the same.

But why? The abortion seller has already received their payment. Why take this choice away from women who have suddenly changed their mind?

The only answer is that it’s never been about choice. It’s always only been about abortion.

That’s also why the Abortion States, and many corporations, are providing funds for abortion travel yet taking no steps, but creating no added benefits for women to keep their babies.

The year has, indeed, been full of unexpected things in the wake of Dobbs.

Surely the future is becoming more obvious as our nation polarizes more distinctly into Life States and Abortion States akin to the Free States and Slave States of the 19th Century.

Even as pro-lifers celebrate, Big Abortion is throwing everything it has at protecting and promoting the culture of abortion.
