Planned Parenthood ups its focus on chemical abortion: Report

Planned Parenthood ups its focus on chemical abortion: Report (Anna Shvets/Pexels)

The largest abortion provider in the U.S. has boosted its focus on chemical abortions, a new report says, with an 82% increase in facilities that offer DIY abortion services, compared to a 39% increase of those offering surgical abortion.

American Life League’s Planned Parenthood Facilities Report found that Planned Parenthood increased the number of its abortion facilities by 162 between 2005 and 2021, with a majority of those being facilities that provide chemical abortion.

The findings point to an overall decline of Planned Parenthood facilities and customers, the report’s summary said, while at the same time showing an increase in the percentage of facilities that offer some form of abortion. With most of those being chemical abortion pill dispensaries, the report says, it shows the abortion giant’s rising dependance on the abortion pill for income.

“America’s abortion giant is pushing pills in its quest to continue profiting off of pregnant women,” a release from American Life League (ALL) said.

“The lion’s share of the increase is in pill abortion facilities,” said Rita Diller, interim director of STOPP International. “While all of Planned Parenthood’s 176 surgical abortion facilities offer pill abortions as well, an additional 215 facilities offer only pill abortions, bringing its surgical plus pill abortion total availability to 391 locations.”

STOPP International is ALL’s program for raising awareness on Planned Parenthood.

“Planned Parenthood now runs 55% of all surgical and/or pill abortion facilities in the United States,” Diller said. “This includes a whopping 82% of pill-only and 39% of all surgical locations.”

The marked increase in Planned Parenthood’s promotion of chemical pill abortions signals a troubling trend toward DIY or so-called “self-managed” abortion, the statement from ALL said.

As Planned Parenthood was boosting its efforts to push the chemical abortion pill ALL called for pro-life advocates to continue to oppose Planned Parenthood from the local level on up.

Chemical abortion, also known as medical or medication abortion, already accounts for more than half of the abortions committed in the U.S. And according to the report, Planned Parenthood is working to push chemical abortion drugs more than ever in the aftermath of the Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade.

Chemical abortion frequently occurs without proper medical oversight, meaning women would be put at increased risk.

“These unsupervised procedures—self-administered without continuing medical oversight—are incredibly traumatic and dangerous to women,” Diller said. “They come with an FDA boxed warning for serious and sometimes fatal infections or bleeding. Many women report extreme stress and trauma caused by expelling their dead baby’s body at home, alone, after days of nausea, severe cramping, and bleeding.”

This increased focus on chemical abortion indicates a decline in growth for the abortion industry, she said.

“While Planned Parenthood predicted that it would have 2,000 facilities by the year 2000, it peaked at 938 facilities in 1995,” Diller said.

“As of this 2021 report, it has 567 locations,” she continued. “That’s 133 fewer than it operated in 1973 when Roe v. Wade was erected by the Supreme Court to allow abortion. Clearly, Planned Parenthood is in severe decline.”

The Planned Parenthood Facilities Report had other findings pointing to conclusions that:

• Planned Parenthood now runs 55 percent of all surgical and/or pill abortion facilities in the United States. This includes 82 percent of pill-only and 39 percent of surgical locations.

• The core of Planned Parenthood’s business has been—and continues to be—abortion.

• Planned Parenthood has continued its overall shrinking trend for 19 consecutive years. In 2021, the abortion giant closed 11 facilities and opened six.

• Planned Parenthood focuses on growing its abortion services in highly populated areas, choosing to locate “where the money is.” California and New York top the list with 108 and 52 Planned Parenthood facilities, respectively. By contrast, there are currently no Planned Parenthood facilities in Wyoming and North Dakota.

Now with the increased availability of the abortion pill online and through the mail, unregulated, untracked, and without a doctor’s supervision, the risk to women is at an all-time high.

American Life League president Judie Brown called for an increase in the number of pregnancy help centers, especially in proximity to where a Planned Parenthood facility exists.

“The overturning of Roe v. Wade sets the stage for the battle to ban abortion at the state level,” Diller said. “We encourage life advocates to join our efforts to build a solid wall of resistance to Planned Parenthood at its centers and wherever its leaders and supporters appear.”
