(NRLC) As many as 20,000 pro-lifers crowded the streets of Madrid Sunday to protest plans by Spain’s socialist government to greatly expand abortion.
“The ‘Yes to Life’ march in Madrid over the weekend brought tens of thousands of people to the streets in opposition to the legislation,” the EMEA Tribune. “A video from the news outlet RT showed many young pro-life advocates in the crowd carrying signs that read, ‘Abortion is not a right. It is a crime. Life is a right,’ and ‘I’m young. I’m pro-life.’”
“There are other alternatives,” said Yolanda Torosio, a 44-year-old secretary who attended the protest with her daughter. “After an abortion there is always trauma but that is not talked about.”

The newspaper reported that the government of Socialist Prime Pedro Sanchez “is preparing a law to ensure that all public hospitals perform abortions, and wants to ban protests outside of abortion clinics as ‘harassment.’”
Under the proposed legislation, minors of 16 and 17 years old could have an abortion without their parents’ consent.

The abortion laws were changed in 2010. Under its provisions, women could get abortions in the first 14 weeks of a pregnancy without limitations.
“But the map of where abortions are available is drawn up less by national law than by Spain’s doctors,” the New York Times reported, “In large numbers and across the country, doctors refuse to perform them.”
The EMEA Tribune added, “According to the OMC Spanish doctors’ association, ‘most’ obstetrician-gynecologists who work in the public sector consider themselves ‘conscientious objectors’ and refuse to carry out abortions.”
Alicia Latorre, president of the Spanish Federation of Pro-Life Associations, told Alfa Y Omega, “We cannot conform and get used to this situation of growing aggression against human life that we have been living in Spain for decades.”
