As states pass pro-life laws pro-abortion vitriol persistsNebraska Gov. Jim Pillen signs LB574 into law (governor.nebraska.gov)

Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen signed a bill earlier this summer that bans abortion at 12 weeks of pregnancy, along with stopping unregulated use of puberty blockers for minors and banning “gender-altering” surgeries for minors in Nebraska.

The abortion ban in LB574, the “Let Them Grow Act,” went into immediate effect on May 23, while the ban on sex change procedures and hormone treatments was set to go into effect October 1. Prior to passage of the bill, abortion in Nebraska was legal up to 20 weeks. The new 12-week abortion ban includes exceptions for rape, incest, and to save the life of the mother.

Tensions were high between Nebraska legislators surrounding the bill’s passage, according to NBC News.

During the debate on the legislation, pro-abortion protestors yelled obscenities at pro-life lawmakers while throwing what appeared to be bloody feminine products from the balcony. NBC also reported that insults were traded among lawmakers with threats of refusal to work together in the future.

The pro-abortion animus was limited to pro-life lawmakers in Nebraska over the legislation.

On the heels of the law’s passage, notes from Jane’s Revenge, threatening to “shoot up” St. John Paul II Newman Center on the University of Nebraska at Omaha campus and Christ Community Church with “AR14 rifles” should the abortion ban be passed were released in the media.

Jane’s Revenge is the radical pro-abortion group currently under investigation by the FBI for making violent threats against pro-life advocates.

The notes were left in December. The first note was found at the St. John Newman Center when the leadership for a Students for Life Action political leadership workshop arrived to conduct the event with Nebraska pro-lifers. SFLA quickly reconvened at a different location for everyone’s safety. The second note left at the church read the same but addressed to the church.

According to Kyle Shideler, director and senior analyst for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism at the Center for Security Policy, Jane’s Revenge should be viewed as a domestic terror group, given their previous communiques threatening to hunt down pro-lifers in their homes and kill them, and violent acts toward pro-life organizations, including arson and firebombs.

The Jane's Revenge Nebraska threats join the long list of bullying and violence targeting pro-life and pregnancy help organizations since the May 2022 Supreme Court Dobbs decision leak.

Just a week after Pillen signed the “Let Them Grow Act” into law the American Civil Liberties Union and the ACLU of Nebraska filed suit against the state of Nebraska on behalf of Planned Parenthood and abortionist Sarah Traxler, chief medical officer of Planned Parenthood North Central States, challenging the law.

The basis for their case is that the Nebraska constitution holds that no legislative bill can have more than one subject.

At press time the portions of LB574 regulating puberty blockers for minors and banning “gender-altering” surgeries for minors remained set to take effect on October 1.
