Who’s the real conservative? Trump pardons pro-life advocates.

I’m not a huge fan of political games when it comes to life and death and one game that conservatives have been playing far too long is the “long-game.”

The “long-game” sounds something like this, if the goal is saving lives, then slow roll backs of abortion laws face less resistance and save more lives in the end. The idea would be to start with a third trimester ban and build from there over time.

I’m all for saving the most lives, but often this slow-moving strategy has typically only bought time for “conservative” politicians who want pro-life votes but not pro-life legislation.

This is why I was highly critical of Donald Trump’s strategy to blame pro-lifers for GOP losses in 2022 and even more angered by his waffling on the issue in his re-election camping. Many excused his soft stance on the issue as political strategy akin to the “long-game.” Trump needs to do whatever he can to get back in office or there won’t be any more pro-life wins as there was in his first term, they argued.

I don’t think anyone voted for Trump and not Kamala because he waffled on the issue of life. However, I was wrong about my frustration with Trump.

Donald Trump just signed an executive order to pardon 23 pro-life activists who were unjustly imprisoned by the Biden administration for violating the FACE Act, including a 76-year-old grandmother.

The FACE Act is a law that criminalizes the use of physical force, threat of physical force, or physical obstruction to intentionally injure, intimidate, interfere with or attempt to injure, intimidate or interfere with any person who is obtaining or providing  “reproductive health services” (aka abortion) or person who is exercising or trying to exercise their First Amendment right of religious freedom at a place of religious worship.

Even though the Act includes provision for religious worship and the language is purported to apply to pregnancy centers as well, it is well known that the law is really a way to criminalize pro-life advocates for protesting outside of abortion facilities and that’s how the law has been used 97% of the time.

This move by our president, this early into his second term, only means that we can expect even more wins for innocent lives.

What’s even more exciting is the FACE Act could mean the next win under Trump.

Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, has already reintroduced legislation to repeal the unconstitutional Act.

I can humbly admit this much, I’m not prepared to give up on the short game yet because I know life is a winning issue, but I have to give credit where credit is due.

If Trump played the long-game and it gave most pro-life president in American history a chance to do what he just did, then play away. With “conservatives” like him in office we might just abolish a culture of death in our lifetime.
