Silent No More celebrates 20 years of post-abortion healing

Silent No More celebrates 20 years of post-abortion healing (Silent No More Awareness Campaign)

The Silent No More healing campaign recently marked 20 years of helping those who have suffered from abortion.

Co-founded by Janet Morana, executive director of Priests for Life, and Georgette Forney, president of Anglicans for Life, Silent No More gives a voice to those suffering from the trauma of abortion while encouraging healing in local areas.

The Silent No More Awareness Campaign performs outreach to people who have been hurt by abortion and encourage them to take part in after-care, and invites those who are ready to speak out about abortion to help others avoid the harm, while also raising awareness.

Through Silent No More those who have experienced the loss of a child or other family member by abortion have shared their stories at pro-life events since 2003.

Many hold signs that state, “I Regret My Abortion.”

Silent No More has brought to light the often-neglected parties involved when abortion happens - fathers and siblings of the aborted baby. Men can often be seen holding signs that say, “Men Regret Lost Fatherhood” at pro-life events.

These witnesses to post-abortion healing through Silent No More include on the steps of the Supreme Court at the national March for Life in Washington D.C., the powerful and poignant accounts punctuating the end of the March.

Many who have been served by Silent No More will also pray in front of abortion centers across the U.S., providing a powerful witness for young women who are headed into the center for an abortion.

The physical, emotional, and spiritual ramifications of abortion can follow women and men for decades.

Silent No More offers support for the many potential negative aftereffects of abortion.

These include grief and regret, often suffered in silence, depression, relationship problems, drug or alcohol abuse, and even suicidal thoughts. Miscarriage, infertility, and breast cancer can follow abortion as well.

In a typical year between 150-200 post-abortive people reach out to the campaign, Forney said. Media coverage of the abortion issue leading up to the Dobbs decision and the 2022 midterm elections brought a big increase in people seeking healing through the campaign. Presently there are over 21,000 post-abortive people in the Silent No More database.

“Some people, when they find us and realize there are so many other people suffering in the same way they are, it’s like finding a sorority you don’t want to belong to,” Forney said. Nine out of 10 post-abortive people who come to the Silent No More campaign did not know that recovery programs were available.

The largest network of pregnancy help organizations applauded the Silent No More Awareness Campaign on the occasion of the ministry’s 20th anniversary.

"Giving women a voice to share their story, share their truth, has been championed by Silent No More since their inception," said Beth Diemert, Heartbeat International Director of Affiliate Services. "I have stood at the steps of the Supreme Court and other venues as well and listened to this happen on more than one occasion. The empowerment it gives women for additional healing and the opportunity to advocate for themselves is invaluable. Well done, Silent No More and happy anniversary!"
