How appropriate that on December 20—five days before the observance of the most fantastic and wonderful pregnancy ever—the reading in the One Year Bible should be Psalm 139:
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
A better verse for honoring the sacredness of human life from conception until natural death cannot be found. For pro-life believers, our problem is convincing those who do not believe and are not interested in God or the truth and power of this verse.
One of the best ways I’ve found to reach such people are the stories that have come from the pregnancy help centers across America, which are mainly responsible for reducing the number of abortions. For more than 30 years, I have spoken at fundraising events for these centers. I have heard dozens and dozens of stories from women who made the right choice not to play God and those who made the wrong choice, had an abortion, and lived to regret it.
Yes, I know there are stories from “the other side”—women who claim they are glad they aborted their child—but these do not have the power of those told by women who allowed their children to live, despite difficult circumstances.
Tell those stories and if you don’t know any, call your local pregnancy help center and ask to be introduced to some of these courageous women who will tell them to you.
Mary and Joseph made the right choice about Jesus because they allowed God to be God. Wonderful things happen when we do the same.
