In the crosshairs of the abortion lobby is the medical protocol Abortion Pill Reversal (APR). Christa Brown, BSN, RN, and senior director of Medical Impact with Heartbeat International, was recently interviewed on the topic during a Facebook Live with Heartbeat’s Lora Current. Brown oversees the Abortion Pill Reversal Network for Heartbeat.
“Chemical abortion…[is] also called the abortion pill, which really sort of oversimplifies it because that makes it seem a bit, very fast, very simple, it's a quick solution,” said Brown. “When really these are two different medications given at two different times for two different purposes. So, it's quite a long process. It's a dangerous process. And it's something that many women are not really prepared for when they hear the abortion pill because it's compared to Tylenol, which sounds very quick and easy.”

The “abortion pill” is not one, but two drugs. The first drug, mifepristone, blocks the hormone progesterone. As a result, the uterine lining breaks down and “eventually kills the embryo or fetus via lack of oxygen and/or nutrients.”
The second drug in the abortion pill regimen is misoprostol, usually taken one or two days later. Misoprostol causes contractions to expel the contents of the uterus. APR works to replenish progesterone as an antidote to the initial mifepristone drug.
“[W]e can give bioidentical progesterone…to outcompete with mifepristone so the pregnancy can continue,” said Brown. “When a woman does have regret, which is very common, just after she starts her chemical abortion, she can contact us and get the help that she needs, and we can get that progesterone to her in time. And she is able to continue that pregnancy.”
The APR regimen is also very safe for mother and child, contrary to the claims of the abortion lobby.
“What we are offering women is a bioidentical hormone…safely given to women since the 1950s,” Brown said. “It's commonly given for other things like recurrent miscarriage or preterm labor. It's a very common hormone given to women. And it's not progestin, which is what is in hormonal birth control. This is a bioidentical type of progesterone. So, it's very safe for the moms and it's also safe for the babies. Dr. Delgado's study showed that the birth defect rate in babies born after successful reversal is no different than the general population.”
Dr. George Delgado, pioneer of the reversal protocol, produced a study showing an APR effectiveness rate of up to 68%. To date, over 4,500 children have been born to mothers who changed their minds after taking the first abortion pill and followed the APR protocol.

“Some of these children are 10 years old already,” Brown noted.
Other forms of misinformation from the abortion industry persist. Women who change their minds after taking the first abortion pill have been told by abortionists they must take the second pill. The abortion-affirming American College of Gynecologists (ACOG) claims “Medication Abortion ‘Reversal’ Is Not Supported by Science.” They assert this on the specious claim that “as many as half of women” who take mifepristone-only will continue their pregnancies anyway. The implication is that babies that survived after the mother received the APR protocol would have survived anyway. Yet the study in ACOG’s citation for that claim actually says the figure is 10-45%.
In a separate interview, Brown addressed how ACOG inflated the number by adding incomplete abortions to the total: “ACOG struggles with differentiating between an incomplete abortion and a surviving embryo. An ‘incomplete abortion’ means that the baby and other uterine contents were not emptied, but it does not imply a baby’s survival.”
Despite overwhelming evidence of APR’s safety and effectiveness the state of California has filed a lawsuit to prevent Heartbeat International from advertising APR as “safe and effective.” Prior to being formally served, Heartbeat issued a press release in response, affirming “All major studies show that using progesterone to counteract a chemical abortion (Abortion Pill Reversal) can be effective since it’s the very same hormone a woman’s body produces to sustain her pregnancy.”
“We are confident in this life-saving protocol,” said Heartbeat President Jor-El Godsey. “That's why Heartbeat will not back down from offering hope to women at any point in pregnancy. Our commitment is to her—to offer compassionate, caring, and truthful support.”
