Two Truths. Two Powerful Reminders of Who We are.

One of my favorite pastimes is to listen for the pulse of the pregnancy help community; to find our strengths, to listen to how we are addressing our weaknesses and to discern our path going forward.

The other day, I got a clear picture of this as I visited with an executive director at CareNet’s annual conference in San Diego. It was one of those brief moments when you can almost hear the God of all creation saying, “Listen to her!”

She was on her way to a meeting; I was standing outside of a booth. We exchanged greetings and as I asked how things are going, she told a story; a story of her visiting with a financial supporter regarding a particular gift. Stay with me for a second; there’s a salient point here.

There’s no reason to detail everything here, but the evening before her conversation with this supporter, she sensed from God that instead of asking for a “safe” gift—one she knew the supporter would likely give—she was to ask for another particular gift which, in her mind, was quite a risk for her.

Instead of taking the easy, safe road, Becky asked for the particular gift. The answer, you’re not surprised to know, was an emphatic “Yes.” From there, new doors opened for funding she could not have imagined.

Here’s the point: In our ministries we have a weapon that can stand against any and all opposition. We have the voice of God, if we will listen.

Many of you reading this can relate to me similar stories to Becky’s, where in a moment God pointed you in a direction much different than you planned, only to roll up His sleeves and perform the amazing.

Readers, before we get cranked up and begin to fret over the things we do not have, let’s remember what we do have. Through Jesus Christ, we have a direct connection to God Almighty, maker of the heavens and the Earth. Forgive my overly-theological explanation here, but “That’s a big deal.”

I’m reminded of Peter and John in the fourth chapter of Acts, coming upon the beggar asking for alms. Instead of thinking about the fact that they had no money to give, they realized they were in possession of something much greater. So Peter responded, “I do not possess silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, walk!”

Peter and John weren’t fretting over what was missing because they knew they had a connection—a powerful connection—with the very son of God.

And as Martha told Jesus in John 11 as her brother Lazarus lay dead, “Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you,” we know we have this same ability to communicate with Jesus, the son of God.

This column is not meant to be a devotional. Instead, this is an extremely practical understanding of how to defeat the Planned Parenthoods, how to reach unreachable clients, how to work through the typical challenges every center faces and how to literally shift a culture which appears unyielding.

Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in the challenges, to fret over the Goliaths and to wonder if we will ever move toward accomplishing the impossible. I get it.

But for a moment, let’s all remember two foundational truths.

The first truth? We are on God’s side. He created these children to know Him and to love Him. It is His desire that they join all of us in this world. In addition, He wants all who are already born to know Him and to follow His son, Jesus.

This is true. We need to own this and never forget it.

Secondly, God hears those who seek to accomplish His will. And, He wants to communicate with us so we will be more effective in our efforts.

Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry may have powerful branding. They may have money. They may have the ear of this culture at times.

But. They cannot gain wisdom from God for their efforts. Nor can they ask anything of Him to assist in their work. That’s for us.

And I’ll take that over anything else, any day and any time.
